Montavilla Guitar Studio Partners with Montavilla Food Co-op

Montavilla resident and co-op member, Neil Mattson has lived in the neighborhood since 2009. He and his partner, Tina Granzo, have been active volunteers, hosting co-op meetings at their home and donating their talents when called upon to do so.

A native of Michigan, Neil is a member of People’s Food Co-op in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti Food Co-op, and Detroit’s Cass Corridor Food Co-op. Neil’s personal philosophies align with the co-op spirit. He believes in shopping local to reduce the carbon footprint of the conventional food shipping industry, neighbors helping neighbors to build a vibrant and that the health of a neighborhood starts with the availability of clean, fresh, healthy, organic food choices. Supporting the Montavilla Food Co-op is essential to achieving that end. After spending seven years teaching mainly in the west side neighborhoods of Portland and in Lake Oswego and Beaverton, he decided to start his own studio with the goal of bringing the highest musical education experience to the east side and, more specifically, Montavilla.


NeilMattsonWith Montavilla Guitar Studio (MGS), Neil has designed a program that shows every student the path toward guitar mastery. His approach centers on developing musicianship skills through note reading and ensemble playing. MGS is conveniently located in the heart of Montavilla, just blocks from the Stark Street business corridor.

In addition to being an experienced teacher, Neil is a professional performing guitarist, composer, band leader, and producer. He was a featured composer for the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble’s 2012–13 season and produced a new CD with his band, Trio Flux, in 2013 as well.
